Hey, coach - you ready to fail? If so, draft wrong like several of your predecessors? Joey Harrington? Gone. Mike Williams? See ya, fatty. Charles Rogers? What's on Adult Swim.
Jim Schwartz, Tom Lewand, Martin Mayhew and James "Shack" Harris are the new Detroit Lions brain trust. Mayhew has put the team in good draft position by trading the awesome Roy Williams to Dallas for their first-round pick. Now the Lions have three of the top 35 draft slots. What to do?
#1 - Take a tackle. Jason Smith of Baylor is a big, nasty and phyiscal blocker. Lions Quarterbacks need to stay upright, and a blocker like Smith will help in the running game.
#2 - Grab someone who can tackle. Time to focus on the other side of the ball. Last year, the Lions traded stud DT Shaun Rogers to the Cleveland Browns for a guy who is now in New England (thanks Millen). So, we need another lane-clogger. This made it harder for Ernie Sims to be effective at the LB position. So, we could go after a DT here, but I prefer a linebacker. Forget the guy from Ohio State, I like Rey Maualuga from USC. The comparisons that people made on this guy are to Ray Lewis 9without the knifings).
#3 - Trade the first pick in the second round to Denver for Jay Cutler. is this a long shot? Sure. He was the third QB drafted in the first round when he left Vandy, but the relationship between Denver and Cutler are as Ike and Tina. If Cassel was traded for a second rounder, that should be the going rate for second-tier tossers.
