"I don't think we've even comprehended what's just happened in the last few hours."
Yankees infielder Andy Phillips
"Plain and simple, they dominated us," Alex Rodriguez said. "It's not like we lost by one or two runs. They actually kicked our ass."
Who in Detroit would have believed this in April? May? Come on. The New York Yankees, with 26 World Series, talking about how they got monkey-stomped by the Detroit Tigers. This is the same Detroit team that last had the media interested in them by attempting to set the single-game losing season not to friggin' long ago. The same Detroit Tigers that some openly thought should contract.
My God. The Yankees are probably going to dump their best manager ever in Joe Torre over this. Reports are that he'll be replaced by (Sweet) Lou Pinella.
This is simply great. Damn it, Detroit is a baseball and football town. Sure, the Pistons and Red Wings are great, have great and likable players, but this town loves football and baseball. One day, maybe the three of us that are still Detroit Lions fans will be able to get this excited. It's been since 1987 since the Tigers won a playoff game. However, it's been 15 years since Barry Sanders and company beat Dallas in the Silverdome.
Good for Brandon Inge. A guy who's been here when the Tigers REALLY sucked. He's moved from catcher, where he was one of the best defensive players at the position, to third base. He took it like a man, and now he's in the playoffs.
Good for Jim Leyland. This guy was washed up. Ran out of Colorado. Couldn't relate to players. Bullshit.
Good for Dave Dombrowski. He's done just what he did in Florida. Took the owners checkbook and bought the good groceries. He restocked a bare cupboard, and got rid of a lot of rotten fruits.
Good for us. It's nice to have a winner in one of the Big Two sports. Being here in Europe makes me realize how dumb these people are. They think baseball is boring. I shall go outside now and punch the first European (that's smaller than me) and tell him baseball is great.
